Filipe Gomes

Filipe Gomes and his family grow kiwi berries on three hectares of land in the beautiful Minho area of northern Portugal, an hour north of Porto.

“Our orchard is located in the heart of Alto Minho, at approximately 500 metres above sea level on the slopes of the Lima River, close to the Peneda-Gerês National Park,” says Filipe.

Kiwi berries are a climbing plant. The vines flower in May, and are naturally pollinated by the wildlife that thrives in the organic orchard: bees, beetles, and other friendly insects. The fruits start growing in clusters over summer, and are harvested in August. Each delicate little kiwi must be picked by hand.

Filipe first started growing kiwi berries in 2015. Now, after some experimentation, he grows seven different varieties – including Bingo, Ken’s, Red, Fresh Jumbo, Weiki, and Ananasnaya. Not only do the chosen varieties have outstanding flavour; they also ripen at slightly different times, allowing Filipe to extend the short season up to two months.
